Stirling Castle occupies Castle Hill, a volcanic crag above the River Forth, in one of Scotland's most strategic locations. For centuries it controlled routes between the Highlands and Lowlands and became a major royal and military stronghold.
Within the castle, the Renaissance royal palace and Great Hall reflect its importance to the Stewart monarchs. Mary, Queen of Scots was crowned here, and the castle's position helps explain why Stirling appears so often in Scotland's political and military history.
The views from the hill extend across central Scotland towards the Forth valley, linking the architecture of the castle to the landscape it once commanded.
The castle's history includes moments of celebration as well as conflict. Its great buildings were designed to display royal authority and courtly culture, while the defences reflect the uncertainty of a strategically important frontier. Seeing the castle from Castle Hill helps make those two roles—royal residence and commanding fortress—easy to understand.

Doune Castle is a notably well-preserved medieval stronghold near the River Teith. Its great hall, gatehouse and high curtain walls give a clear impression of a late-medieval Scottish castle, while its restrained setting makes it feel different from the more formal royal castles nearby.
The castle has also become familiar to modern audiences through film and television, but its greater interest lies in the survival of its medieval architecture. From the exterior or inside the grounds, it offers a compact and atmospheric historic stop on the approach to the Trossachs.

The Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift created to reconnect the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. Its distinctive form has become a modern Scottish engineering landmark, replacing the historic flight of locks that once linked the two waterways.
Watching the structure and exploring the public area gives a clear sense of how canals shaped travel and trade across central Scotland. The site provides an engaging contrast to the castles and older monuments on the route, with water, design and machinery at its centre.
Public viewing areas are free to visit. Optional activities and tickets are paid separately and subject to local availability.
South Queensferry looks across the Firth of Forth to three bridges built in different eras: the red cantilever Forth Bridge, the Forth Road Bridge and the Queensferry Crossing. Together they make one of Scotland's most distinctive engineering skylines.
The Forth Bridge is internationally recognised for its pioneering nineteenth-century design, while the newer crossings show how the estuary has remained an important route into Fife. The waterfront viewpoint gives time to step out, photograph the bridges and enjoy the village setting.
Highland weather and visibility can change quickly, so the view and conditions on the day may vary.

Meet at 17 Charlotte Square, Edinburgh, or request pickup and drop-off at another suitable address within Edinburgh. Pickup or drop-off outside Edinburgh is available only by individual agreement.
